    If you have recently had sex without a condom, a condom has broken or slipped, or you are concerned that you may have been exposed to an STI, it is important to test at the right time.

    The window period is the time between becoming infected and the infection being reliably detected by a test. Testing too soon after exposure can sometimes give a negative result even though an infection is present.

    As a general guide:

    When to test after possible exposure:

    • Chlamydia: 2 weeks

    • Gonorrhoea: 2 weeks

    • HIV: A laboratory 4th-generation test is highly reliable from around 45 days (6½ weeks)

    • Syphilis: Up to 12 weeks may be required for a reliable result

    • Hepatitis B: Up to 12 weeks may be required

    • Hepatitis C: The timing depends on the test used and the type of exposure; further testing may be recommended

    • Genital herpes (HSV)Testing is generally most useful when symptoms such as blisters or sores are present

  • Don't wait for the window period if you have symptoms.

    Symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain when passing urine, genital sores or ulcers, pelvic or testicular pain, or a new rash should be assessed by a healthcare professional. Testing may be appropriate sooner, and you may need a clinical examination or additional samples.

    If you have had a recent high-risk exposure to HIV, seek urgent specialist sexual-health advice rather than waiting for a routine test, as post-exposure treatment (PEP) may be appropriate and needs to be started promptly.

    Results are usually back in 2-working days.

    • Chlamydia trachomatis

    • Mycoplasma genitalium

    • N.gonorrhoea

    • Trichomonas vaginalis

  • Blood test with a swab or urine sample, tests for:

    • Chlamydia
