CA125 is a blood test that can help assess ovarian health and is commonly used when investigating symptoms that may be associated with ovarian cancer.

A raised CA125 does not necessarily mean cancer. Levels can also increase with conditions such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, menstruation, pregnancy and inflammation.

Who may consider a CA125 test?

You may wish to discuss testing if you have symptoms such as:

• Persistent bloating or abdominal swelling

• Pelvic or abdominal pain

• Feeling full quickly

• Changes in bowel or bladder habits

• Unexplained weight loss or fatigue

CA125 should not be used as a standalone screening test or to diagnose ovarian cancer. If you have ongoing or concerning symptoms, we recommend discussing these with a doctor.

The SRY (Sex determining region Y gene is located on the Y chromosome and plays a key role in male sex development. As this gene is absent from the maternal genome, it’s detection in maternal blood serves a highly specific marker of male foetal DNA. During pregnancy, small amounts of cell free foetal DNA circulate in maternal blood. In male pregnancies this includes SRY.

A simple blood test just to look at the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA).

PSA is produced naturally by the prostate, and levels can increase as the prostate gets larger with age.

A raised PSA does not necessarily mean prostate cancer. It can also be associated with an enlarged prostate, inflammation or infection of the prostate, and other factors. However, a PSA test can be an important first step in identifying whether further assessment may be appropriate.

Who might consider a PSA test?

You may wish to discuss PSA testing with a healthcare professional if:

• You are concerned about your prostate health

• You are over 50

• You have a family history of prostate cancer

• You have noticed changes in your urinary symptoms

• You would like to understand your individual prostate health risk
