You will have counselling with a GP first then a blood sample will be taken afterwards.

You have to be aged over 40 (or >35 if you have a strong family history).

This is not suitable for those who have already had cancers looking for recurrence, only for those never diagnosed with cancer.

It diagnoses the cancers it is screening for 95% of the time.

The results take two weeks and we will arrange a consultation if required to discuss these further.

    Estimated cost: £1200

  • You can book a smear test with or without HPV testing.

On the NHS cervical screening programme (ages 25–64), every sample is tested for HPV first. If HPV is found, the cells are then examined under a microscope (cytology).

In a private clinic, you can choose:

    • Smear with HPV testing – checks for the presence of the virus that can sometimes cause cervical changes.

    • Smear without HPV testing – examines only the cervical cells (cytology).

HPV testing isn’t always necessary. For example, if you’ve had regular negative HPV results over many years and remain low-risk, you may feel reassured by a cytology-only test. On the other hand, if you want the most up-to-date approach or extra reassurance, adding HPV testing may be worthwhile.
